Notes from the Road: Sayulita, Mexico

Notes from the Road: Sayulita, Mexico

Sayulita is a coastal village located on Mexico's Pacific shoreline in the state of Nayarit. It is known for good waves, bright colors, and intoxicating energy. A quick 40-minute ride from Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita is a community of artists, makers, and an eclectic group of international ex-pats that live a purposeful life and are conscious of their impact. The natural elements and bright colors of the town make for the perfect backdrop for our luxury certified organic skincare collection.

Our friend, Casey Steffens, a New York City-based photographer, recently shot a campaign with Mexico-Native model and recent Vogue Mexico cover girl, Effy Betancourt. We caught up with Steffens upon her return to talk about her inspiration for the shoot, her favorite establishments to visit in Sayulita, and the Ogee product she can't live without.

Q. How did you first get into photography?
A. I got a camera when I was twelve and started shooting EVERYTHING.
Q. What was the inspiration for the shoot?
A. I am always inspired when I go to Mexico and I get to shoot with one of my favorite faces, Effy. Those two things alone are inspiring for me. Natural elements, color.
Q. Can you tell us about the location of the shoot?
A. Sayulita is a great little town on the pacific coast. I’ve gotten to explore it with locals since my boss, Anne Menke, lives there now for fifteen years or so. Great place with lots of people who are invested in their community.
Q. What are your top Places to Visit in Sayulita?
A. Hmmm, I just love walking around town to get fun stuff for my apartment from Mañana or Hotel Hafa. Then after shopping, I normally go to Purillo for fish tacos!

Q. Favorite Ogee product and why?
A. I love the sculpted lip oils because they are so versatile in giving a lot of hydration and a nice hint of color. I am one who is minimal with makeup, so a little shade is nice for me, and I also use it for cheek color. The cleansing oil is great as well since I mostly only use body oils for moisturizer, it’s a good addition to my regimen.
